myrecovery app on the main stage at the British Orthopaedic Association 2021 Annual Congress

The myrecovery app presented at the BOA by Professor Phil Turner

We were honoured and delighted to feature in two main auditorium presentations at this year’s BOA congress in Aberdeen - and in very fine company too!

In a highly relevant and interesting session titled Elective Care Restart and Recovery: Where are we now and what have we learnt? chaired by Immediate Past President Mr Bob Handley and President Professor John Skinner, Vice President Miss Deborah Eastwood opened proceedings with a sobering overview of the severe impact that COVID has had on orthopaedic surgery across the country and the many thousands of people waiting for joint replacement surgery.

In England, waiting lists have grown by 30% - another 160,000 people - and the number of people waiting for over a year has increased 140-fold.

The myrecovery app can be tailored to support any treatment pathway

Professor Phil Turner later described the situation in Greater Manchester and how the Greater Manchester Orthopaedic Alliance (GMOA) is mobilising to monitor and address the orthopaedic waiting lists in the region.

Among other things, this will involve using the myrecovery app to support patients before and after hip and knee replacement surgery with pre-op education, self-management tools and progress tracking, while enabling healthcare professionals to remotely monitor how their patients are doing.

The myrecovery app aims to inform, support & empower patients through each stage of preparation and recovery

The aim is to maintain a connection between the “waiting well” and their team, which can help to identify those who may need more support.

The myrecovery app - supporting waiting list management

Mr Arthur Stephen also highlighted the myrecovery app as a digital tool that can help both patients and clinicians to face the additional challenges posed by COVID to orthopaedic waiting lists. Mr Stephen spoke of the need to involve patients and also raised the prospect of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help to manage the growing waiting lists more effectively.

The session also included highly relevant and fascinating presentations from Andrew Bennet on #BestMSKHealth; Professor John Skinner on elective recovery and the impact on the orthopaedic workforce; Versus Arthritis on the Versus Arthritis Patient Survey; Mr Oliver Adebayo on the impact on orthopaedic training, as well as further comments on approaches from around the UK from Professor Mike Reed, Professor Tim Briggs, Mr Mark Bowditch and Mr Julian Owen.

It is clear that COVID-19 has had a huge impact on orthopaedic patients across the country. We are very grateful and humbled to be working across the orthopaedic community to help tackle these challenges.
