Why

A response to COVID-19

The outbreak of COVID-19 placed the world’s healthcare services under extraordinary pressure. The decision to prioritise hospital capacity for COVID-19 and cancel planned surgery to free up crucial resources was the only option under these circumstances.

That decision came with significant knock-on effects, with global waiting lists now at an unprecedented level. Thousands of people have been left without access to their physio, surgeon and regular support, often in chronic pain. Many of these are over 70 years old, particularly vulnerable and isolated at home.

Advancing outcomes

Founded by surgeons, msk.ai developed the myrecovery app to help people living with joint pain by improving their treatment and care. When we saw the healthcare response to the COVID-19 crisis, and understood what the knock-on effects would mean, we quickly leant on our experience to develop a Joint School app for the thousands of people whose procedures have been disrupted.

The app was a digital version of some of the Joint School services provided by hospitals under normal conditions for people awaiting joint replacement surgery.

As the world reopens and surgeons return to their operating rooms, msk.ai is helping the global orthopaedic community to meet these challenges . Together we are reimagining how orthopaedic surgery can be delivered in this new world, with the shared goals of advancing patient outcomes and improving the lives of people living with joint pain.

Supporting the orthopaedic community

Professor Tim Board

Consultant Hip and Knee Surgeon at the Centre for Hip Surgery at Wrightington Hospital

“I'm delighted that our patients at Wrightington can now benefit from the Joint School app. We've worked with the team at myrecovery to make sure the app can support our patients in this difficult time when their operation has been postponed. We are now planning how we can restart elective surgery so now is a good time to use the app to prepare for surgery.”

Mr. Stephen Eastaugh-Waring

Deputy Medical Director, North Bristol NHS Trust - Avon Orthopaedic Centre

“Many patients in the South West have had their hip and knee replacements delayed due to COVID-19. At North Bristol Trust we have been working with the team at myrecovery to bring you this app. The app is intended to guide pain management, support mobility and prepare you for your surgery. Surgery is on the horizon, now is the time to prepare.”
